Local SEO: how to show up when somebody searches for your service in your city

For a business serving its own area, local SEO gives the most back for the least effort. The three factors that decide the ranking, what NAP consistency is and what to do about reviews.

· Marketing

If your business serves customers from a specific area — an accountancy practice, a garage, a clinic, a shop — there is an important difference from general SEO: you are not competing with the whole internet, you are competing with the businesses in your city. That makes the effort required far smaller and the results visible sooner.

And it is where most small businesses leave visibility uncollected, because almost nobody does the three basic things properly.

The three factors that decide the ranking

1. Relevance

That what you offer matches what people search for. It sounds obvious and it fails constantly: a listing that says «consultancy» does not appear when somebody searches for «tax adviser», and a site whose home page talks about «integrated solutions» tells nobody what you do.

The fix is to write with the words the customer uses, not the ones the industry uses.

2. Distance

The proximity between the searcher and your location. It cannot be changed, but it can be used: if you have a real address in the area you want customers from, you have a structural advantage over any large, distant competitor.

3. Prominence

How well known you are: reviews, mentions, links, consistency of your details across the internet. It is the factor you can work on most and the one almost nobody works on.

The business listing: what really moves the needle

The business listing on search engines and maps is, for many local businesses, more important than the website itself. It is free and it is usually half done.

What has to be completed, no exceptions:

  • The right primary category, and any secondary ones that apply. It is one of the heaviest factors and it is often chosen badly.
  • Real opening hours, public holidays included. Out-of-date hours generate the worst review there is: from somebody who turned up and found you closed.
  • A description in the words the customer uses.
  • Services listed one by one, not in a generic block.
  • Real, current photos. Not stock images.
  • Frequently asked questions answered by you before anybody asks them.

NAP consistency

NAP stands for name, address, phone. The rule is simple and it is breached on a massive scale: those three details have to appear exactly the same everywhere you are listed — your site, your listing, directories, your social profiles, your invoices.

Exactly the same means that «C/ Mayor 5, 1º B» and «Calle Mayor 5 1B» are, to an automated system, two different addresses. When it finds different versions of your details, it lowers its confidence in all of them.

This is the most boring job in local SEO and the one that pays best: an afternoon going through every place you appear and unifying the detail character by character.

Reviews: what you can do and what you cannot

Yes: ask for them. From every customer, systematically, at the moment they are happy. A direct link in the closing email multiplies the response rate.

Yes: reply to all of them, good and bad. Replying to criticism politely and with a concrete solution convinces the reader more than ten pieces of praise.

No: buying them, writing them, or incentivising them with discounts conditional on being positive. Besides breaching platform terms, in Spain and in Chile a fake review is misleading advertising with legal consequences, not merely bad practice.

And a point that gets forgotten: if you publish customer testimonials on your site with a name or an image, you need their consent. It is personal data processing.

Local content that actually works

Write about what your customers in your area ask, mentioning the real context: the deadlines of the body that affects them, the procedures of their municipality, the quirks of their local sector. That content ranks because it answers concrete searches, and it convinces because it shows you genuinely work there.

What does not work: creating forty identical pages with the city name swapped. It gets detected, and it is penalised.

How to tell whether it is working

Three numbers, reviewed once a month:

  1. Calls and route requests from the listing.
  2. The searches you appear for, and which of them are brand searches and which are not. If they are all brand searches, people who do not know you are still not finding you.
  3. New reviews per month and average rating.

If this sounds like you

The listing, NAP consistency and content that answers what your customer is searching for are digital marketing and content. If what is failing is the website everything rests on, that is web and online shop, and what it costs is in what a business website costs.

General guidance. The terms of listing and review platforms change frequently and are checked in their official documentation. The prohibition on fake reviews derives from each country's unfair competition and consumer protection rules.
