When you start exploring how to sell to the State in Chile, the name "ChileProveedores" soon appears. Is it the same as registering on Mercado Público? Is it compulsory? How much does it cost and what is it actually for? The confusion is common because they are two different systems that coexist, and understanding the difference saves you from losing an award because your paperwork was not in order.

What ChileProveedores is

ChileProveedores is the Official Register of State Suppliers, run by ChileCompra. It works as a centralised platform that stores, verifies and accredits your commercial, legal, financial and technical documentation: company background, tax certificates, social security status, experience and more. The aim is that public bodies can verify your suitability without asking you for the same documents over and over in every tender.

When a public body asks you to be "registered and in good standing on ChileProveedores", it is requiring your information to be uploaded, current and free of observations on this platform, not simply that you have an account on Mercado Público.

The difference from the free registration on Mercado Público

They are two different things and it is essential not to confuse them:

Registration on Mercado Público (mercadopublico.cl): completely free. With your Clave Única you create an account, link your company where applicable, and you can start bidding in tenders. This registration is the minimum for taking part.
ChileProveedores (chileproveedores.cl): an advanced register, with an annual registration fee. It accredits your background centrally so that public bodies can verify it without requesting it from you each time. The registration fee is updated periodically, so it is worth checking the current amount directly on the portal.

Put another way: you can bid with the free registration alone, but some contracts require you to be registered on ChileProveedores at the moment of award.

Is registering on ChileProveedores compulsory?

Not in order to bid. However, many tenders —especially larger or more complex ones— include in their specifications the requirement to be registered and in good standing on ChileProveedores at the moment of award. If you win the tender but are not registered when required, the public body cannot formalise the contract with you and may award it to the next bidder. It is one of the most frustrating reasons for losing an award you had already won.

So even though it is not compulsory to get started, it is worth planning ahead if your aim is to reach higher-value contracts.

How to register step by step

Go to the ChileProveedores portal (chileproveedores.cl) and create your account or sign in with Clave Única.
Complete your information: company details, legal representative, business activity.
Upload the documentation that evidences your position: SII certificates, social security status (AFP, health), commercial background, the company's legal documents where applicable.
Pay the annual registration at the current rate. Payment activates your profile.
Keep your documents current: some certificates expire and you must update them to stay "in good standing".

Good standing is what enables you to contract. If there are expired documents or circumstances that disqualify you (employment, social security or other debts), your status can change to "not in good standing" and you would lose the ability to formalise a contract.

What information ChileProveedores accredits

The platform verifies and stores different categories of background depending on the type of supplier:

Tax position: whether you are up to date with the SII.
Social security position: AFP and health system contributions up to date.
Commercial background: DICOM or other payment-behaviour reports.
Legal documents: deeds, powers of attorney, constitutive instruments for legal entities.
Experience and technical capacity: in some cases, certifications or references from previous contracts.

When is it worth registering?

If you are just starting and aiming at Compra Ágil or small tenders (L1): you can wait. The free registration is enough to start learning the system and building a record.
If you are going for higher-value contracts (LE, LP, LR) that require it: register in advance, not the day before the award. Documents take time to be verified.
If you bid frequently across several public bodies: ChileProveedores saves you submitting the same documentation repeatedly, which justifies the annual cost.

In short

ChileProveedores and registration on Mercado Público are two different systems: the second is free and lets you bid; the first has an annual cost and accredits your background to the State. It is not compulsory in order to take part, but many higher-value tenders require it at the moment of award. The practical strategy: start with the free registration, learn how the system works and move to ChileProveedores when your goals and the processes you are targeting require it.
