Why it ends up being needed
An unmaintained website does not break in the first month. It breaks the day an update pending for a year collides with another one, or the day the certificate expires, or the day somebody gets in through a plugin with a flaw that has been public for six months. And it always happens at the worst moment, because there is no other kind.
The usual pattern is that the site was built by someone who has moved on, nobody knows the password to get in, and the last backup is from a date nobody remembers and nobody has tried restoring. A backup that has never been restored is not a backup: it is a folder.
This is the monthly fee that avoids that afternoon: updates reviewed before they are applied, a weekly backup held off the hosting with a restore tested every quarter, certificate and domain watched with warning before they expire, and a monitor that tells you if the site stops responding. Plus a one-page report each month.
What is included
- Updates to the CMS, the theme and every plugin, reviewed before they are applied
- A weekly backup held off the hosting, with a restore actually tested each quarter
- Certificate and domain watched, with a warning before either expires
- Downtime monitoring: if your site stops answering, you know and so do we
- A one-page monthly report: what was updated, what broke and what we fixed
What gets decided before a line is written
- Why updates are not left on automatic — Because an automatic update that breaks the site does it on a Saturday and nobody notices until Monday. They are reviewed first, applied with a fresh backup in place, and if something breaks it is rolled back the same day.
- What makes a backup a backup — Having been restored. It is tested every quarter in a separate environment, and that test is what separates a backup from a folder of files nobody has ever opened.
- Where the backup lives — Off the hosting. A backup living on the same server as the site is good for undoing your own mistake and good for nothing on the day the problem is the server.
- What gets flagged and what gets done without asking — Updating, renewing and restoring happen without asking, because waiting for a reply is what leaves a site down over a weekend. Touching content, prices or sections never happens without saying so.
What is not included
- Content, price or section changes: those are quoted separately, and saying so plainly avoids the "I thought that was included" conversation.
- Redesign or new pages.
- The cost of hosting, the domain, or theme and plugin licences.
- Search rankings or campaigns, which are the digital marketing service.
What you need to have
- Access to the CMS admin panel and to the hosting
- A contact address somebody actually reads, for the alerts
Frequently asked questions
What happens if an update breaks the site?
That is what the weekly backup with a tested restore is for: we roll it back and tell you the same day. It is also why updates are reviewed before being applied rather than left on automatic.
Does it cover content changes?
No. This keeps the site alive and secure; changing copy, prices or sections is quoted separately. Saying so plainly avoids the «I thought that was included» conversation.
What if you did not build my site?
That is the normal case. We start with the review, because you have to know what you are working on before committing to keep it running.
Can I cancel whenever I want?
Yes, there is no lock-in. The access credentials are yours from day one and the backups are handed over when you leave.
